Mayor Emanuel announces next steps to transform Fisk Coal Plant site into community asset

Mayor Rahm Emanuel joined leaders of the Fisk and Crawford Reuse Task Force to announce today that the Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) and NRG Energy have entered into a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to explore potential redevelopment of the Fisk coal plant site into a CTA bus garage and maintenance facility. Significant sections of the Fisk site would also be set aside as open space and a park for use by the community, and the site will be better connected to the Chicago River. Outlined in blue is the land on the Fisk Generation Station site that is available for future redevelopment, according to the PERRO report.

There is no shortage of ideas among Pilsen residents about what to do with the site of the now-shuttered Fisk Generation Station located in the West Side Chicago neighborhood.

However, many in the area seem to share one concern: site remediation and cleanup.

For more than a decade PERRO lead the campaign in Pilsen against the neighborhood’s biggest polluter – the Fisk Coal Plant on Cermak. In September the Fisk plant will be closing. Now we have the opportunity to construct something on the site that will benefit the entire community.

What do YOU want to see at the Fisk Plant Site?

PERRO (The Pilsen Environmental Rights and Reform Organization) for more than a decade lead the campaign in Pilsen that resulted in the closure of the neighborhood’s biggest polluter – the Fisk Coal Plant on Cermak Ave. Now we have opportunity to construct something on the site that will benefit the entire community. PERRO is joining with FEDCMI (Federacion de Clubes Michoacanos de Illinois), Duango Unido and NALACC (National Alliance of Latin American and Caribbean Communities) to host a community forum to gather your input.
